The 22 GT is almost as fast as a 22 Creed or 22-250, but in an AR15.  It’s derived from the 6 GT that George Gardner(owner GA Precision) and Tom Jacobs (owner Vapor Trail Bullets). Designed with competition shooting in mind—Light recoil, excellent velocity, exceptional consistency both downrange and through the chronograph.

Just like the 6 GT, we decided to run it with shorter, lighter bullets to run it in the AR15 platform.  We spun up a few barrels to do some testing.  The SD’s were superb, accuracy was great and it was very easy to load for.  The first test was done with 64gr Hammer Hunter bullets, which wasn’t the best bullet to load due to the length of the bullet, but we got 3458fps with Varget powder and Winchester Small Rifle Primers.  This same load, with a longer seated bullet in our bolt gun ran at 3615fps, most likely due to the 24″ barrel compared to the AR15’s 20″ barrel.

Next test was the 70gr Hammer Hunter bullet, this yeileded 3245fps, the accuracy wasn’t as good as the 64gr bullets, but it was just one load without proper load development.

The following week, we tested a 60gr Sierra and a 45gr Cutting edge bullet, but due to the amount of folks on the range, our Lab Radar picked up so many shots, we couldn’t tell which was ours.  We will do this test again.

Fast forward to last week, Blake and I went down about an hour away from the shop to try it out on some coyotes.  First stand we call in a double and drop the female.  The bullet went in and didn’t exit at 90yds, dropped this small female in her tracks.  We called in another one and got it with the 6 ARC, which in its own right is a deadly cartridge too, but the 22 GT didn’t get to bark again.

Our good friend Braden in Texas ordered a 22 GT barrel for his Terminus quick change action from our sister company, Spade Composites, and hes been laying out the coyotes and pigs down there for several months.  The 22 GT is a formidable round for any predator.

Now the bad, in the AR15.  Reloading is the only way to spin up some ammo.  There is no hunting ammo available for the 22 GT, not as yet.  The other midly annoying downside is it can only fit 7 rounds in an AR15 6.5 Grendel mag without it bulging too much to get it to fit in the AR receiver.

Our rifle setup is as follows:

SD AR15 receiver set

Spade Composites carbon 20″ barrel

458 Socom bolt

Kynshot HP hydrualic buffer

MFT Minimalist stock

Velocity 3lb trigger

The case capacity of the 22 Creed is a little more, but the AR15 22 GT is right up there with it on speed.  More testing is needed, but the weight savings is way worth it, if you hike more than a couple hundred yards.
